Kitsch style in the interior of a modern apartment

The emergence of the kitsch style is considered to be a turning point on the verge of perceiving new trends in culture, fashion, which are replacing established orders, rules and norms of behavior. On the one hand, this may be due to economic instability in general, and on the other hand, to moods that arise under overzealous pressure from above.

The dual attitude to this style in the interior is also manifested in its presentation. This polar division is related not only to the financial side of the issue. Because if this style is considered from the point of view of wealth, then roughly speaking it is a manifestation of complete bad taste in the desire to demonstrate all one’s savings, the desire to impress others with one’s wealth and, as a result, the house does not look like a full bowl, but rather overflowing. But in terms of poverty, kitsch style manifests itself more as a challenge. Although at the turn of the times, much is used as imitation, and in imitation not only of the general style, but also in the use of cheaper analogues instead of expensive materials: gilding is replaced by bronze paint - like gold, gypsum stucco molding is replaced by a fake made of foam.

Most apartments can still be classified as kitsch. It is not only about the dominance of carpets on the floors and walls, but also the use of many details and trends from other directions that you like. The desire to join at least the edge of life to the aristocracy, inexorably attracts to install a marble fireplace in the living room, and a four-poster bed in the bedroom. But the bas-reliefs corresponding to the era are replaced by something “simpler” and preferably “cheaper”.

This also applies to other design issues and items of daily use. The refrigerator eventually turns into a kind of exhibition and report on perfect travels, and silverware and crystal get only on major holidays, wooden furniture made of expensive woods is replaced by their more inexpensive counterpart, and similarity is achieved with the help of some simple tricks. Modern interiors have not been able to completely get rid of figurines and frames with photographs, as well as all kinds of pillows and soft toys, the entire functionality of which comes down to storing some emotions and memories tied directly to these instances of industry and mass production.

Diametrically opposed concepts fashionably and beautifully relate primarily to the style of kitsch., in the vein in which it is presented by many designers. The craze for fashionable color or certain images is reflected in the works of many eminent masters. This becomes a kind of concession to mass needs and demands. But unlike independent attempts to embody the kitsch style in mixing the incongruous not only in colors, but also in furnishings, designers draw a certain single line that connects all these objects and colors with some single element.

Interior items in the style of Kitsch

Deliberately using different pieces of furniture that fit a variety of styles can result in a kitsch interior. It can be an old antique chest of drawers painted in an acid-bright color, wire lampshades or made of rice paper, chairs and armchairs from a variety of sets, or from one, but painted in radically different colors. As a result, they are united only by a common location in one room. Such manifestations are considered the main feature of the discovery of style in a modern interior.

Kitsch in the interior does not promote the rejection of harmony, because being in a disharmonious environment for a long time is subject only to units. Rather, there is a certain rejection of the rules, in terms of the manifestation of freedom from norms and accepted dogmas. Therefore, a kind of comfort and consonance are a necessary condition. And the brightness and originality of the incarnation become a reflection of an eternally young and restless soul, striving to embrace as much as possible without stopping for a moment. And this property is inherent not only to creative people or teenagers.

Kitsch in the interior can be not only ironic, but also a very serious mistake on the part of the owner of the premises. When the embodied ideas are not that they were specially selected with some intent, but when using materials and objects with the confidence of a person who is able to single-handedly recognize the authenticity of a particular instance. For example, in a living room designed in a strict Japanese style, a painting by Japanese masters is placed, but in a chic gilded frame, which does not correspond to either the painting or the oriental path, but is fully commensurate with the majority's idea that paintings should be presented in expensive frames.

On the other side of the economic coin, there is a kitsch-style interior, which came not from a good life, but with the embodiment of the idea that “need for invention is cunning”, “but everything is done by one’s own hands” and “no one has such”. In such a reproduction, the interior exists until the moment the financial situation of the owners of the premises changes. Assorted chairs are eventually replaced by a full-fledged set, graffiti on the walls flow into a color sustained in the same range, and aggressive and defiant kitsch is gradually replaced by a calmer version of itself, in order to grow into something completely different over time.
