10 Stunning Interior Photos From The Great Gatsby Filming

See the luxurious interior decorations for director Baz Luhrmann's production of Fitzgerald's classic.

Hall

The Jay Gatsby Room features marble columns, a curved staircase and a gilded ceiling. “On the one hand, this is a sad picture of loneliness in a luxurious gothic house, but it is also a house of great wealth and beauty,” says producer and costume designer Katherine Martin. "He was to be the epitome of Gatsby's great ambition and his optimistic and romantic soul."

Terrace

The large terrace has decorative balustrades and crenellated awnings. The work was so amazing that it impressed even the veterans of the film crew.
“There were amazing moments, like shooting the pool scene with Gatsby when he leaves a big party. If you follow the camera, you will see 20 or 30 crew members with mobile phone cameras on,” says Tobey Maguire, who plays Nick Carraway. “It never happened on set, but it was a very revealing sight…”

Party Scenes

At night, Gatsby Terrace transforms into a venue for wild and extravagant parties.

scenes on the coast

The romantic scenes are filmed in the coastal landscapes of Long Island, where the homes of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Tom and Daisy Buchanan (Joel Edgerton and Carey Mulligan) are located. “East and West America were completely different,” says Luhrmann. “The eastern part was a community of nobles, financially secure, those who inherited great wealth and lands. They are in constant confrontation and attack the Wild West, which looks to them like rabble, nouveau riches who suddenly got all the money. This clash between two worlds is powerful and vivid throughout the story.”

House Buchanan

Tom and Daisy Buchanan's home is a red brick mansion with manicured lawns and gardens. “The Buchanans were incredibly wealthy,” says Martin. “We needed to demonstrate that Gatsby's wealth was competitive, since inwardly Gatsby always thought he didn't get Daisy because he was poor.”

Light and airy seating area

The interior of the Buchanan house features light, flowing white draperies, a red and white carpet, and bright chandeliers.

Bar selling illegal liquor

Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby visit a bar with rich, Art Deco details that were in vogue at the time. Arches and decorative table lamps are fragments of this direction.

Jay Gatsby

Luhrmann knew exactly who he saw in the difficult role of the protagonist. “I've been secretly working on this for some time already knowing who could play Jay Gatsby,” he says. “Actually, it wasn’t hard to imagine someone…hmm…I don’t know..he’s complex, romantic, mysterious, glamorous,..a great actor…”

Myrtle Wilson

Known for her sensuality and crush on Tom Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson (Isla Fisher) is dressed in pink, romantic hues. This color also appears in wallpaper, flower arrangements, sofa upholstery.
