Partition - what is it?

By definition, a partition is a wall that divides the interior space into individual rooms. In this capacity, structures can act:

The type of partition that will appear in your house will depend solely on the mission that it has to perform in addition to the main task. If the boundary between the rooms should be monolithic, well soundproofed and not changing its shape, then, of course, a blank wall made of “heavy” materials will become a priority solution. In other cases, you can use easily assembled or generally mobile partitions.

Stationary partitions

Partitions in this category include:

• from stone;
• bricks;
• foam concrete;
• tree;
• drywall;
• glass blocks;
• polycarbonate.

A combination of materials is allowed. So, bamboo and glass inserts can be framed in a metal-plastic frame or tightened with textiles and reed paper. Designs are perceived in an original way, where wooden elements are randomly fixed on a steel frame, but this will be more of a decorative solution than an insulating one. What kind of interior partitions will be required in your home, you can decide only after getting acquainted with the characteristics of each material.

Brick partitions

Brick is a well-known and time-tested material. The partition, only half a brick thick, is taken as the standard of sound insulation and this is confirmed by SNiPs. But still, the traditional material has plenty of disadvantages.

1. With increased noise load, which is the scourge of modern life, there will be a need for additional work on soundproofing such a wall, for example, thickening its wall.

2. The brick has a solid mass. The volumetric weight of a cubic meter of material is 1,800 kg, and this is a colossal load on the floors. It is much easier and safer to use plaster, foam concrete or drywall with a hollow frame to create an interior partition.

3. To bring out a smooth wall, you will either need to master the skills of a bricklayer yourself, or involve a specialist. Since the work will be carried out using a solution, it will not be possible to do without dirt, and this also does not add positive.

4.The need for a multi-stage decorative finish of a brick partition with surface leveling is also not encouraging. On average, the layer of plaster applied for this is 1.5-2.5 cm, and this will make the structure even heavier.

Foam concrete partitions

The volumetric weight of foam concrete is much less, which is ensured by the porosity of the structure, but foam concrete blocks are in no way inferior to brick in terms of their strength. Another positive point is the large size of the building unit, which significantly speeds up and facilitates laying, but this can also be recognized as a lack of material, since the foam block partition will “eat” noticeably more space than a brick one, and the surface will also have to be plastered before decorative work.

Problems will be with soundproofing. To ensure it, a partition of 10 cm wide will have to be covered with at least a centimeter layer of plaster, and on both sides. It should be noted that the low density of the material and the porosity of the structure will not allow the blocks to hold screws and nails, which means that there will be problems with fixing wall cabinets, etc. Hanging something heavier than a picture on such a partition is simply dangerous.

Gas-ridge and gypsum partitions

For the manufacture of these plates, alabaster enriched with various additives is used. As a building material for partitions, hollow gas-ridge models are more often chosen. They differ:

1. Ease.

2. Durability.

3. Good sound insulation.

4. The ability to perfectly hold nails.

To install such a partition, you do not need to have a special education. The simplest tongue/groove connections allow you to assemble the elements together quickly and efficiently. As a result, you get a flat and fairly smooth surface, so that the need for plastering work is eliminated initially. You can immediately move on to its decor. If the partition is planned to be painted, then it is better to pre-coat it with a finishing layer of putty, for greater aesthetics.

Plasterboard partitions

These are prefabricated structures, consisting of:

• from the frame base;
• soundproof layer;
• drywall sheets.

The main advantage of interior partitions of this type is the ability to assemble them in non-standard configurations. There are no restrictions on the width of the wall, which allows you to install a sliding door, the canvases of which will be hidden inside the wall. Drywall is the best solution for creating curved partitions with any bend radius.

The quality of the sound insulation of the structure will depend on the filler. Most popular:

1. Mineral wool boards.

2. Styrofoam.

3. Ecowool.

Mineral wool materials have the best soundproofing performance, however, not all of them are safe and can be used for interior work, so read the specifications and study the certificates when choosing a filler from this series.

Working with fibrous materials of any kind and environmental friendliness will require the use of personal protective equipment.The problem is that small fragments of fiberglass not only settle on the skin and cause irritation, but also enter the respiratory tract and the mucous membrane of the eye with the same success, which can provoke serious diseases. Do not be lazy to put on a respirator, overalls, gloves and ensure good ventilation in the room for the period of work on interior partitions.

The finished drywall surface is puttied. This helps to hide the butt seams, fastener caps and prepare it for finishing.

Glass block partitions

The material does not absorb odors and is easy to clean with products used in the care of conventional glass.

This is the only one of the monumental partitions that can let in light. For transparent blocks, the level of light transmission is up to 80%, for matte and colored partitions - up to 50%. The patterns on the blocks create extraordinary light-shadow patterns.

 

There are few shortcomings, but they are significant. In glass blocks it is impossible to conduct wiring and hide communications. On such a surface it will be impossible to attach either a shelf or a planter. In addition, the glass block element cannot be sawn or cut if the design requires it: it will be necessary to purchase ready-made parts to remove angles and adjust proportions.
