Fixture design

The dimensions of the carpentry workbench determine the complexity of the work that will be done on it. Accordingly, the larger the workbench, the more massive wooden blanks can be repaired.

Moreover, for work at a workbench, the use of both manual equipment (saw, chisel, brace) and mechanical (electric jigsaw, drill, planer) is applicable.

Combination of parts

The main properties that a workbench for the home has:

The surface of the device is made of wood. For these purposes, dry boards are selected, 5–6 cm thick.It is best to use wood that has been pretreated with drying oil. Otherwise, the table top of the workbench will not last long.

The height of the structure is adjustable.

The main elements of this type of workbench include the workbench (its base) and the lid (working surface).

Workbench

Components of a carpentry workbench

The table top of a locksmith's workbench is usually made of hardwood. However, pine is used for the underlayment.

The lid measures approximately 60–80 mm in thickness and 500 mm in width. The parameters of the desktop depend on the main purposes of manufacturing the workbench.

Podverstache is collapsible and stationary. Since the device is easy to assemble and disassemble, it is convenient to use it during transportation.

Workbench

Collapsible workbench

If the underbench of the workbench is made of metal, then planks are additionally attached to its base to protect against various defects. For this purpose, the countertop is upholstered with linoleum. This method will prevent small items from falling into the slots on the desktop.

It is recommended to install high sides on the lid of the workbench so that small parts that are being processed do not roll off the surface. The protective partition will isolate the workplace and prevent chips from flying out during metalworking.

Vice types

Before choosing a workbench, you need to find out what vices exist for these devices.

The vise is designed to fasten workpieces to the structure. For the efficiency of the workflow, special grooves with wedges are installed on the cover of the workbench, thanks to which the bars are attached.

The properties of the vice depend on the specifics of the work.

There are the following types of fasteners:

Chair vise.

The vise got its name because it is attached to the base in the form of a chair. They are designed for heavy work. They are used very rarely.

Classification of locksmith workbenches

Locksmith workbenches can be of various types.

There are single and double structures. The type of fixture depends on the number of cabinets it has.

Basically, the diameter of a locksmith's workbench with one bedside table is 120 × 80 cm, and from 80 cm in height. This type of single workbench is rightfully recognized as the most convenient.

Workbench

Single workbench

Workbenches, consisting of several bedside tables, are usually made at large specialized enterprises.

The dimensions of the double workbench are approximately equal to 280 cm in length.

There are also pedestal fixtures.

The single-pedestal workbench is made of high-quality metal, the thickness of which reaches 2 mm.

The working surface of this design is most often made of wood or galvanized material. Often, these workbenches are equipped with hanging shelves for storing equipment and other devices.

Workbench

Double backpack with hinged shelves

Single and double locksmith workbenches differ only in the number of bedside tables. The more drawers and lockers provided in the fixture, the more convenient it is to store various tools and building materials in it.

Today, a reinforced workbench with a metal cover, reaching 5 mm in thickness, is especially popular. All structural elements are interconnected with fixing bolts.

Workbench design

The height of the device must be correlated with your own height. With an average height of a person (170 cm), it is rational to make a workbench 90 cm high. It will be very convenient to work at such a table.

The complete set of a workbench for the home is selected taking into account the work that is planned to be carried out on it. In the usual sense, a workbench should have stops, recesses on the work surface for various parts and a vice.

When designing a structure, it is necessary to take into account which hand the master is leading - left or right.

Workbench

Project of a simple single workbench

The dimensions of the workbench for the most part depend on the size of the room. The following standard desktop dimensions are set: 2×1 m.

It is better to place the structure near the window. It is necessary to provide additional sources of lighting. Not far from the workbench, you need to leave a place for sockets.

How to make a workbench

Before proceeding with the independent construction of the desktop, it is necessary to decide for what purposes it is needed. For example, to carry out work with wood material, a carpentry workbench is used. And for the repair of metal products, a metal workbench is used.

A workbench for the home is convenient not only for performing work, but also for storing building materials and technical equipment.

How to make a locksmith workbench with your own hands

First of all, it is necessary to think over the place where the structure will be located. And also it is worth considering where the sockets will be installed.

The optimal size of a single desktop is 80x80x150 cm.

The frame and tabletop of a locksmith's workbench is usually made of hard metal. In some cases, steel profile pipes are used.

Workbench

Workbench frame made of profile pipes

The main property that a structure should have is stability. The main thing is that the workbench can withstand heavy loads. The same requirements apply to the desktop tabletop. She must be reliable.

The thickness of the cover of the workbench is about 5 cm. The working surface is upholstered with linoleum or textolite to protect it from various damages during the processing of workpieces. The thickness of the steel coating is approximately 0.5 cm.

Workbench

The worktop for the workbench must be reliable

In finished form, a home-made workbench will be a semi-industrial device, on which, if necessary, a vice can be installed.

By means of welding equipment, frame corners are interconnected. The steel cover of the workbench is usually welded, and the wooden one is securely fixed with fixing bolts. Free space under the lid-top can be taken under drawers, shelves or cabinets.

Recently, transforming workbenches have received particular relevance. They have a sliding lid and several wooden frames connected to each other in the form of scissors.

Workbench

Transforming Workbench

If the finished locksmith workbench is impregnated with an antiseptic, then it will last much longer.

The frame of the desktop, as a rule, is made of soft wood species, and the lid is made of hard wood.

The type of workbench does not affect the choice of the place in which it will be located.

The device must be as reliable and stable as possible.

Homemade workbench

A do-it-yourself workbench is a great option for those craftsmen who are tired of using stools or other furniture attributes as a desktop.

Versatile and functional design can be an excellent place to create and store a variety of tools.

A workbench for the home should have the following properties:

  • spacious storage space for building materials;
  • recesses are required in the table top of the workbench for fixing workpieces;
  • the design must be stable;
  • thoughtful configuration of the device;
  • perfectly flat work surface.

Making a workbench from plywood

To make such a homemade workbench, you will need:

  • usually 2 m long;
  • electric saw in the form of a disk;
  • notched trowel 2x2 mm;
  • glue "Moment", intended for gluing plywood;
  • plywood strip 1.22x0.3 m;
  • plywood sheet, 1.8 cm thick.
  • clamps.
Workbench

Tools for making a workbench

This workbench will be a structure made of several plywood sheets.

The dimensions of the countertop should be 1.5x0.6 m, and the thickness of the cover should be up to 7.2 cm.

Plywood is a fairly expensive building material, so one plywood sheet can cost about 1,000 rubles, excluding delivery.

In order to save money, you can use only one sheet of plywood.

First of all, you need to make blanks for the desktop countertop. To do this, one sheet of plywood must be divided into several equal parts, 1.52x0.61 m in size.

Then, after checking the plane of the sheets, you will need to fold them to each other so that they are inward with the convex side.

After that, the parts must be glued together. Glue is applied with an ordinary brush on one surface of any plywood quickly, in a matter of minutes.

This is a rather complicated process.

Instead of Moment glue, you can use PVA designed for furniture. Glue must be of high quality.

Workbench

Plywood workbench

It is also necessary to take care in advance that there are clamps and boards at hand, with which it will be possible to press the glued parts of the plywood.

When tightening the clamps, you need to keep the plane of the plywood sheets under control. This tool will help, as a rule. The tabletop of the workbench cannot be clamped with clamps, so it can not be loaded additionally.

Several sheets of plywood are best glued together on a smooth surface. After applying the glue, the glued parts are pressed down from above with a heavy sinker.

There may not be a flat surface in the house for the manufacture of this design, however, the clamps will be quite enough for the sheets pressed down by the load to stick together firmly.

It is necessary to wait until the glue dries, remove the clamps and proceed to the next step.

The working surface of the workbench should have a size of 1.5x0.6 m.

It is important that the homemade workbench has the correct geometric shape.

Workbench

Simple workbench assembly plan

To do this, you can navigate the corner of the plywood. From plywood strips, about 15 cm wide, you need to make a perimeter for a workbench. The resulting strips are distributed around the perimeter of the countertop.

The desktop supports are made of timber 4x6 cm in size.

The legs of the workbench create a semblance of several glued parts and one block.

The height of the structure should be proportional to the height of the master, so that it is comfortable to work behind the workbench.

The legs are assembled using glue.

A home-made workbench will be stable if measurements are exactly observed during its construction.

The legs of the device are attached to the tabletop of the workbench by means of self-tapping screws, the dimensions of which should be 8x120 mm.

On the cover of the desktop, you will need to drill recesses to fix various products during processing.

Workbench

Workbench assembly plan with storage shelves

Thus, the manufacture of a homemade workbench takes place in the following stages:

  • Gluing several plywood sheets measuring 1.52x0.61 m.
  • For efficiency, the glued parts of the plywood must be pressed down with a load from above.
  • You can use both Moment wood glue and PVC, but of high quality.
  • To give the workbench the correct geometry, it is necessary to take as a guide small plywood plates measuring 15 cm. They are distributed around the perimeter of the desktop cover.
  • The legs of the workbench are a kind of glued structure, consisting of several parts and one block. They are attached to the cover of the device with self-tapping screws (8x120 mm).
  • Drill recesses on the workbench table top, which will later be needed to fix the workpieces during processing.
  • Build drawers, shelves or cabinets under the cover of the workbench in which equipment will be stored.

There are many types of workbenches for the home. Each type of construction has certain characteristics and features.

To protect the fixture from various damages during the working process, the cover of the workbench is upholstered with a special material. If necessary, the workplace is equipped with a vice.

The device significantly facilitates the workflow, makes it convenient and comfortable.

Making a workbench with your own hands is quite simple. You just need to follow the instructions and understand for what purposes it is made.
